Our guest tonight, Dr. Al Reichman and his wife, Michele, have been studying the Bible with a Jewish lady. She has struggled with the idea that God would allow the horrors of the Holocaust. How could God stand by while millions of His innocent people suffered and died under the cruel heel of the Nazis? Why would He allow such a thing? “Why would God do that?”
The question goes to the heart of whether God is good or not. It probes our assertion this morning: God knows right from wrong. Does He? A lot of people today don’t think so on the basis of perpetual and widespread human suffering.
While God has allowed suffering, He is not the author of it. Suffering is the terrible result of sin and sin bursts from the heart of our brutal adversary, Satan. He planted the hatred in Hitler’s soul. Satan, who has been Israel’s sworn enemy from the beginning, prompted the Nazis to attempt Jewish extermination. God wouldn’t do that, but Satan would.
