In 1984, Donald S. Lutz and Charles S. Hyneman published a study entitled “The Relative Influence of European Writers on Eighteenth Century American Political Thought”. Lutz and Hyneman wanted to trace the sources from which America’s founders got their ideas. They found that one source outstripped them all – by a huge margin. In fact, the Bible garnered more than 34% of the interest from the Founders as they sought inspiration for their governmental ideas. The next closest category came in at 22%. We are told today that America was founded as a secular nation, and that it was actually antagonistic to biblical principles. That assertion would have amazed America’s Founders. The Bible was their primary sourcebook for American liberty.
